Booking your first Thai massage can feel a little daunting — will it hurt? What do I wear? What if I fall asleep? (Spoiler: falling asleep is a compliment.) Here's everything you can expect at your first visit to our Hendon studio, so you can walk in feeling completely at ease.
Before your treatment: a gentle consultation
Every visit begins with a short chat over a cup of warm lemongrass tea. Your therapist will ask about any injuries, areas of tension, whether you're pregnant, and how firm you like your pressure. Nothing is assumed — this is your hour.
If you have any concerns, this is the perfect time to mention them. Our therapists are all women, and many of our first-time guests tell us this is what made them feel comfortable enough to book.
What to wear
For a traditional Thai massage, you stay fully clothed — we provide loose, comfortable cotton garments, a little like pyjamas. Thai massage is performed on a wide, cushioned floor mat rather than a table, which allows your therapist to use gentle stretching techniques.
For oil-based treatments like aromatherapy or hot stone massage, you undress to your comfort level and rest under warm towels. Only the area being worked on is ever uncovered.
During the massage
Thai massage is sometimes called "lazy yoga" — your therapist uses her palms, thumbs, elbows and gentle body weight to press along your body's energy lines, combined with assisted stretches. You'll be moved into positions that open the hips, lengthen the spine and release the shoulders.
It's normal to feel deep pressure, but it should never be painful. Say the word and your therapist will adjust instantly.
"The most common thing I hear afterwards is: 'I didn't realise how much tension I was carrying until it was gone.'" — Nok, senior therapist
Afterwards: the glow
Most guests describe feeling simultaneously deeply relaxed and gently energised — like a full night's sleep condensed into an hour. We recommend:
- Drinking plenty of water for the rest of the day
- Avoiding intense exercise for a few hours
- Taking ten quiet minutes before rushing back into your day (our relaxation corner exists for exactly this)
Frequently asked questions
Does Thai massage hurt?
It shouldn't. Thai massage uses firm, rhythmic pressure, but a good therapist works with your body, not against it. Tell us your preference during the consultation — and at any point during the treatment.
How long should my first session be?
We recommend 60 minutes for a first visit. It's enough time to experience the full sequence without feeling overwhelmed. Many guests move to 90 minutes once they're hooked.
Can I get a Thai massage if I'm pregnant?
Traditional Thai massage isn't recommended during pregnancy, but our dedicated pregnancy massage is a beautiful, safe alternative after the first trimester.
